Den första säsongen av Heroes börjar samma dag som en solförmökelse inträffar. Olika människor över hela världen upptäcker de har supermänskliga förmågor. En man, Mohinder Suresh avslöjar hans fars hemliga teori om ett nytt steg framåt i människans utveckling. En del människor upptäcker att de kan flyga, manipulera rumtidskontinuet, läka snabbt, måla framtiden och läsa människor tankar med mera. Hur de fick sina förmågor är ett mysterium. Hur de kommer att använda förmågorna är upp till dem. En sak är dock känt, deras slutliga öde är inget mindre än att rädda världen...
